VALLEY ABLAZE:
Pottery Tradition in the Catawba Valley
Jason Harpe, Brian Dedmond, Photography by M. Dawn Crouse
----------------------------
Valley Ablaze is the first book which closely examines the work of both early and contemporary Catawba Valley potters. The tradition of pottery making in the Catawba Valley dates back over two centuries, to a time when artisans made pots out of necessity. Times have changed and the tradition’s evolution has followed suit. Still, many of the potters continue to embrace the time-honored methods and knowledge which has passed down from generation to generation. Valley Ablaze documents this through interviews with current potters and memories of those potters from long ago. Historic and candid photographs assist in telling the story. Over 1,000 pieces of Catawba Valley pottery are photographed in studio displays (5 are pictured below).
